Though not an NIOT event this film showing, sponsored by Nassau Presbyterian and Witherspoon Presbyterian churches, certainly looks worth while. “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” a documentary film showing and discussion, will be Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 12:15 p.m. at Nassau Presbyterian Church, Nassau Street, Princeton.
“Pray the Devil Back to Hell” is the riveting, true story of the unsung heroines of Liberia, who, armed only with white T-Shirts and courage, brought down a dictator and ended a long brutal war; thousands of women – ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and daughters both Christian and Muslim – came together to pray for peace, and then staged a silent protest outside the Presidential Palace. As a result of this action, these women were able to bring peace to Liberia after a 14-year bloody civil war.
The film premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival where it won the award for Best Documentary Feature, and has been critically acclaimed world-wide. The film opened theatrically in November, 2008, and has since travelled across the globe to bring its message to war survivors, politicians, community groups and people living through conflict. The Liberian Women depicted in the film have received both a John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage award and the Gruber Women’s Rights Prize for 2009.
This film event is being co-sponsored by the Nassau Presbyterian Church and the Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church. The program is free and open to the public.
