For white people who want to do something meaningful in the face of ongoing racism, Astyk recommends reading or “actively, consciously mak[ing] sure that your kids are reading lots of books with non-white protagonists, with Black language, Black culture and themes that make everyone deal with difference. Or for that matter, books with other non-white protagonists.”

  1. I feel my empathy muscles strengthened by reading accounts of history, stories of how real people acted and situations they dealt with. Reading updated histories that replace and explain faulty textbooks and lessons, faulty public ‘knowledge’ about how things were and came to be.

    • Yes, I agree. My empathy muscles had a workout when I read Mitcheners “Chesapeake.” I could hardly get through it.
