How High-School Girls Won a Campaign for ‘Upstander’

Ben Zimmer writes in the Wall Street Journal about the petition campaign Monica Mahal and Sarah Decker, then seniors at Watchung Hills Regional High School, created to have Merriam-Webster and Oxford University Press include the word “upstander” in their dictionaries.  The word was added to the Oxford Dictionaries in July, 2016.

One of the 2016 Not in Our Town Unity Awards was given to Jamaica Ponder for being an upstander.
