Our Stories: Building the South Asian American Digital Archive
Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at 5:30 pm
Dana Room, 4th Floor, Dana Library
185 University Avenue
Newark, New Jersey

South Asian Americans have been a presence in the United States for more than 130 years. Early immigrants from South Asia worked on farms and factories, helped build railroads, fought for India’s freedom from British rule, and struggled for equal rights at home. Today, more than 3.4 million individuals in the U.S. trace their heritage to South Asia. South Asian American stories are an integral part of the American story, yet little information is available to the public about these stories. Over the last eight years, SAADA has built the largest publicly accessible collection of stories and materials reflecting the diverse experiences of South Asian Americans. Samip Mallick, SAADA’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, will share stories from the archive and how the organization’s post-custodial, digital-only approach re-imagines the possibilities of community archives in the digital era.

The event is presented by the Graduate Program in American Studies. More information about the SAADA can be found at https://www.saada.org/. Any questions about the event can be directed to Mary Rizzo (mary.rizzo@rutgers.edu).
