FIVE CENTURIES FROM SLAVERY TO THE GRAVE

This series takes the participant from the degradation of slavery through a segregated Jim Crow community that survived by faith, hope and the guidance of spirituals and gospels. In spite of centuries of hardship a determined, forgiving and proud community sustained their neighborhood and the town of Princeton by serving as domestics, laborers, entrepreneurs, educators, government officials and physicians. The course will focus on slavery and the history of the African American Community in Princeton; Princeton’s Men of Valor, Paul Leroy Robeson and Albert Einstein; and on spiritual and gospel appreciation. Participants will also visit the segregated cemeteries in Princeton and Hopewell and take a walking tour of the African American experience in Princeton.

Leader: Shirley Satterfield is a retired Princeton High School Guidance Counselor and Historian of the Witherspoon-Jackson Community Twentieth Historic District in Princeton. Martha Sandweiss, Fred Jerome, Rodger Taylor, Beverly Mills, Beverly Owens and Elaine Buck will also assist with this course.

Wednesdays: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., 6 weeks: March 8 through April 12
