Racial literacy has long been a focus of Not in Our Town Princeton (NIOT), and NIOT seeks ways to support efforts to achieve it.  The Princeton High School (PHS) Racial Literacy & Justice class (RLJ), co-taught by Dr. Joy Barnes-Johnson and Ms. Patty Manhart, is continuing to build strong curriculum based on field experiences outside of the classroom. In addition to visits to Philadelphia and New York, planning is underway for the first overnight trip to the Washington, D.C. area, October 23 – 26, 2019.  Among the places visited will be Howard University, American University (Host Campus for the Antiracist Research and Policy Center), the Martin Luther King Jr. monument, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), and the Frederick Douglass House.

As with other PHS field trips, much of the funding is done through the efforts of the students, the families, and community supporters, to supplement funding by the district.

Fundraiser #2: McCaffrey’s (Princeton) Donation Collection

  • Fundraiser Description: Donation Containers (1-hour shifts) from 4p – 8p

Fundraiser #3: Panera (Princeton, Nassau Street) Proceeds Night

  • Date: October 10, 2019 from 4pm – 8pm (Parent partners needed)
  • Point of Contact: Dr. Barnes-Johnson
  • Fundraiser Description: Encourage PHS families and supporters to have dinner at Nassau St. Panera; portion of proceeds donated to PHS RLJ field trip funds

Fundraiser #4: Sponsorship

  • Applicable Dates: Open

  • Fundraiser Description: Donations received from individuals and/or organizations. Make the check payable to PHS PTO, a 501c3, and write “PHS Racial Literacy Trip” in the memo section.
