Martin Luther King Day, 2020 Events

What will you do this year in remembrance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?  There are many possibilities in the area:

January 15, 9 AM – 1 PM, Trenton City Hall, 319 East State Street, Trenton, New Jersey 08608

City of Trenton Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. We will gather in City Hall at 9am for a continental breakfast and short program before heading to the different service locations. After serving, we will meet back at City Hall for lunch. Click here for required registration.

January 19, 11 AM Princeton University Chapel, Martin Luther King, Jr. Service of Recommitment 2020

Guest preacher will be Rev. B. Kevin Smalls, D. Min., Senior Pastor, Hope United Methodist Church, Southfield, MI.

3 – 5 PM New Jersey State Museum, 205 W State St, Trenton, NJ, New Jersey Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission.

“Telling Our Story,” will focus on women leaders of the movement for civil rights and equal justice. We will honor young people who have competed in our essay contest about 10 “Women Who Led…..they cared, they dared,” and how their legacy relates to that of Dr. King.  Click here to register.

January 20 Martin Luther King Jr. Day

8 AM – Noon, 39th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship Breakfast, Hyatt Regency Princeton, 102 Carnegie Center Drive, Princeton, NJ.

Guest Speaker Rev. Buster Soaries.  Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. and the Breakfast will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme of the Breakfast is: “Stand Up and Be Counted”.  Click here to purchase $50 tickets.

9 AM – Noon, Friends of Princeton Open Space, Mountain Lakes House, 57 Mountain Ave., Princeton. A Day of Service in Nature.  To register, click here.

9-10 AM Community Breakfast
Featuring speakers Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman and Ruha Benjamin, author & Professor in the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University

10-11:30 AM Hands On!

Art and history activities. Canned food drive

10:30 –Storytime with JaZams

11:30 AM-Noon Gospel Performance

Free community event is held in collaboration with Princeton University, the Paul Robeson House,  jaZams, Princeton Family YMCA, the Historical Society of Princeton, and the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice.

10 AM – Noon MLK Day of Service, La Convivencia, First United Methodist Church, 187 Stockton Street Hightstown, NJ

Panel discussion “Love Transforms in an Age of Divisions,”  service project (assemble personal care products, “I Have a Dream” poster station, “I Have a Dream” video station,  arts and crafts). Please bring items to donate for RISE’s families. Click here to register.

10 AM – 1 PM West Windsor MLK Day of Service/Food and Clothing Drive, West Windsor Arts Center
