Katherine Johnson Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson, one of the African American women mathematicians whose work at NASA was critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights and was highlighted in the book and movie “Hidden Figures” died on February 24, 2020 at the age of 101. President Barack Obama presented Johnson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
