Sons & Daughters of the Middle Passage Call for Presentations and Book Awards, Deadline March 15, 2021

Call for Presentations for the virtual 4th Annual Conference of Sons & Daughters of the Middle Passage, co-sponsored with the New Jersey Chapter of Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. The deadline is March 15, 2021.

This year, we accept two types of virtual presentations: Pre-recorded/live presentations and pre-recorded ancestor poster sessions. The recorded/live sessions consist of a 20-25-minute video followed by a live Q&A period. The Ancestor poster sessions are very short videos (3-5 minutes) about an enslaved ancestor with relevant information presented on a poster, including the name of an ancestor, dates of birth and death, places of birth and death, spouse and children names, a picture, if available, and enslavement information. You must also submit a short bio (up to 500 words) about your ancestor, citing sources. Click here for an example. Both types of presentations will be on May 22, 2021. We will have our service and book awards banquet on May 21, 2021.

Both types of proposals must be submitted by March 15, 2021. Notice of acceptance will be sent by or before March 31, 2021. We are looking for presentations about genealogy and other connections to African slavery in the colonial period and the United States. Our theme is Voices of Resistance. If you would like to nominate a book, please see the instructions here.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please submit your proposal or essay here or email us for more information, info@sdusmp.org.
