Middle School Renaming: Community Voting

In July 2020, Princeton High School alumnus Geoff Allen began a petition drive to remove the name John Witherspoon from the public middle school. In August, after receiving Allen’s letter and holding public hearings, the Princeton Public Schools Board of Education voted to drop John Witherspoon from the middle school. The school has be known as the Princeton Unified Middle School until a new name can be selected by the board by June 30, 2021.

Renaming the school has been an extended educational process involving students at all grade levels. The community is now invited to participate. To see the “finalists” chosen by the students after considerable research and discussion, click here. You can also vote for your choice among the finalists. Not in Our Town Princeton is proud, though not surprised, that board member and community historian Shirley Satterfield is among the choices.
