Samuel Still will give a presentation about his remarkable ancestors who escaped slavery and settled in New Jersey, where two of their sons were born and rose to prominence. Dr. James Still (1812 – 1882) became a highly regarded medical doctor, despite his being mostly self-educated. His brother, William Still (1821 – 1902), was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, and a chronicler of those perilous journeys to freedom. Tea and cookies will be served starting at 1:45 p.m.
This event is presented in partnership with Princeton Pro Musica in advance of its May 5 concert of “Sanctuary Road” by American composer Paul Moravec. The libretto, by Mark Campbell, incorporates the writings of William Still in telling the stories of those liberated from bondage.
