The Edison Public Library will host a rare screening of Native Land, a powerful semidocumentary narrated by Paul Robeson that exposes violations of civil liberties and workers’ rights in America.
Made by Paul Strand and Leo Hurwitz, this visually stunning yet politically charged film marked Robeson’s transition from mainstream cinema to socially progressive filmmaking, solidifying his role as both an artist and an activist. His commanding narration and moving songs underscore the film’s urgent call for justice.
Following the screening, Dr. Joy Barnes-Johnson, Programs Chair at The Paul Robeson House of Princeton, will lead a discussion on the significance of Native Land—both in Robeson’s legacy and its relevance today.
