Silenced Voices

October 12, 2025 @ 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Free

Silenced Voices is a short documentary film that captures a roundtable discussion between female descendants from both the enslaved community and the enslaving Massie family from Pharsalia Plantation (Virginia) about the reproductive labor of women enslaved at Pharsalia. The film addresses issues of public knowledge and diverse representations in storytelling at sites of slavery. The film demonstrates successful collective storytelling with stakeholders committed to moving the narrative forward by presenting authentic and truthful accounts of slavery. Silenced Voices established an atmosphere of equality, legitimacy of participants’ voices, and space to process difficult truths.

The film was produced by Saving Slave Houses and the James Marston Fitch Foundation. Research and documentary by Jobie Hill of Saving Slave Houses

Content warning: Content may be difficult and painful, as it includes stories of enslaved women and their children within a system of breeding and selling
