Undervalued: How Home Appraisal Discrimination Impacts New Jersey’s Communities of Color

May 29 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Free

The Division on Civil Rights, in partnership with the Division of Consumer Affairs, has launched a Home Appraisal Discrimination Initiative aimed at eradicating persistent inequities in home appraisals in New Jersey.

Join New Jersey fair housing and industry experts in a discussion on systemic racial inequities in appraisal practices. Racial disparities in residential property appraisals, along with other discriminatory housing practices, contribute to the inequality in homeownership rates, segregated neighborhoods, the racial wealth gap, and impact our state in many more ways.

Panelists will share the historical context on housing inequality, the ways bias appears in residential property appraisals, and explain strategies for advancing equity in the appraisal process. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

Panelists:

Nichole Nelson, Senior Policy Advisor, National Community Reinvestment Coalition

Joseph Palumbo, Chief Operating Officer, Worth Valuation Services, Inc.; member, NJ State Appraisal Board

Aarin Michele Williams, Chief Advisor to the Director, New Jersey Division on Civil Rights
