The YWCA is leading the Princeton community in celebrating the birthday and the life of Mrs. Susie B. Waxwood, the first African American director of the integrated Princeton YWCA.
“Ms. Susie, Aunt Susie, Susie B., Mrs. Waxwood, she would respond to any of these beloved and respected greetings! Mrs. Waxwood was a valiant woman whose daily life in Princeton was hugged to the lives and hearts of many.
On September 12, 1902, Susie lone Brown was one of seven children born to John and Lizzie Brown in the little town of Gray, Louisiana. She attended elementary and high school at Straight College, now Dillard University and in 1921 began her studies at Howard University. She graduated in 1925 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature with a minor in History….
Mrs. Waxwood joined Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church in 1942. As a faithful steward at Witherspoon, the service that was closest to her heart was ministering to others. She organized the church’s contribution to Crisis Ministry, now known as Arm in Arm. On her 85th birthday she requested that the congregation donate the number of cans of food that equaled her age. This tradition continues each year on her birthday.” -Shirley A. Satterfield
In honor of Mrs. Waxwood’s great birthday legacy that has been continued through the leadership of Princetonian community activist, historian, and YWCA Tribute honoree, Mrs. Shirley Satterfield, the YWCA Princeton partnered with Arm and Arm and Yes We Can Food Drives. Thanks to the generosity of our rockstar volunteers and caring neighbors, ten shopping carts of canned goods, food and produce from McCaffrey’s Food market-Princeton will be delivered to families in need throughout Mercer County this week. Happy Birthday, Mrs. Waxwood!
